Our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a blend of unique lots from several distinct Sonoma Coast vineyard sites. Old Wente Clone from the Sangiacomo Vella ranch forms a foundation of bright aromatics and balance. Clone 95 from the Sangiacomo Roberts Road vineyard adds minerality and length. Durell Vineyard Old Wente Clone Chardonnay from the historic Hill block adds a layer of rich fruit character and body. Clone 95 from Gap’s Crown Vineyard rounds out the blend with citrus notes, focus and tension.
The 2019 vintage was similar to 2018 in that the mild season allowed for long and slow maturation. The lack of major heat waves and virtually no rain during harvest allowed us to pick every vineyard block at optimal ripeness. The 2019 vintage was slightly lower yielding, which resulted in greater concentration in the wines. Balanced structures and rich flavors are consistent throughout the 2019 vintage wines. Each component in this blend was fermented separately in French oak barrels with 30% new oak. Lees were stirred regularly during fermentation and the first two months of aging. Malolactic fermentation was allowed to proceed in barrel before being stopped at 80%. The components were then blended together to create a winemaker’s cuvée that is expressive of the cool climate, nuance, and balance of the Sonoma Coast appellation.
92 Points International Wine Report – “The 2019 Sojourn Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is comprised of a blend of several distinct Sonoma Coast vineyards and sees 30% new French oak treatment. An indulgent combination of honeyed pears, hazelnut butter, and marzipan fill the senses. Juicy acidity and flavors of vanilla custard and bananas foster linger on the palate.”
